This class could be called a music appreciation class for kids, but we intend for it to go beyond the usually expected fare!
Veteran instructors Tom Faux & Robin Kearton will introduce various topics in a series of 6-week units. The curriculum will encompass multiple facets including: guided listening, history, social context, and musical analysis. Some classes will focus on western art music, others will take a broader perspective. All will be geared toward encouraging students to consider the relevance of music to their own lives.

The topic for Session 1, taught by Robin Kearton, will be “Thinking Like a Composer,” with course material drawn largely from western art music traditions from multiple style periods. Exact details will be fine-tuned on the basis of age and experience of the students who register; no previous music study is required.
Session 2 will be taught by Tom Faux, with an emphasis on social and cultural aspects of popular music genres from the US and other countries.
Examples of possible future topics are: basic music terms, survey of musical devices used in composition (for example: imitation, text painting, musical clichés), social or political aspects of music, following a genre though time, examining influences of music from different cultures in our own culture.
