This class is for kids and adults who can already play their instruments and want to improve their basic music reading skills.

We will provide a workbook with written exercises that will reinforce the skills we learn in class. Students in this class will be expected to complete written assignments each week.
We are currently offering 2 skill levels. We recommend that you take them both. The prerequisite for Level 2 is successful completion of Level 1 or instructor approval.
Students may repeat any level until they are ready to progress to the next level. We will repeat the levels each semester so you have a chance to take them as much as you want.
There is a list of topics covered in each class below.
Here are some things we’ll work on in Level 1:
Rhythm: 
- Understanding proportional relationships in rhythmic notation
- Understanding rhythmic subdivision
- Understanding and recognizing commonly occurring rhythmic cells visually and aurally
- Interpreting simple rhythms on paper
- Understanding basic meters and time signatures
Note recognition: 
- Recognizing notes on the staff
- Interpreting melodic contour
- Comprehension of where the notes are on our instruments
Key Signatures: 
- Understanding where key signatures come from
- Becoming familiar with commonly-used major and minor key signatures
Application: 
- Beginning sight-reading skills on our instruments
- Beginning sight-singing skills
Here are some things we’ll work on in Level 2:
Rhythm: 
- More complex rhythms with mixed note values
- More syncopations
- More rests
- Interpreting compound rhythms
- Interpreting less-common time signatures
Note recognition: 
- Recognizing notes on and off the staff
- Recognizing intervals on the staff
- Comprehension of where the notes are on our instruments
Key Signatures: 
- Understanding where key signatures come from
- Understanding relationship between major and minor keys
- Becoming familiar with more major key signatures
- Becoming familiar with minor key signatures
Application: 
- Continued sight-reading skills on our instruments
- Continued sight-singing skills
