These activities are excellent preparation for or accompaniment to early lessons in playing an instrument, and research shows that learning music helps develop essential cognitive skills used in math and science.

We’ll use creative movement and dancing to learn about kinesthetic rhythm–combining body movements with rhythmic ideas–to develop a sense of pulse and rhythmic vocabulary.   We’ll also sing and listen to music to help develop a sense of pitch.

Guest artists will demonstrate their instruments for us to inform us about those instruments and help us hear different tone colors (timbre).

We’ll have exposure to the musical greats from Beethoven to Miles Davis to help us develop a better understanding of the music around us.

Parents should plan to stay with their children during this class.

The age 5-7 group will join us for the end of each class session for guest artists and larger group activities.

In addition to the skills learned by the younger group, we will start to interpret musical symbols–early music reading! We’ll learn about the music staff, note identification, counting, rhythm, and early music theory with the help of visual, aural, and kinesthetic games.

Parents are invited to stay with their children during this class and there will be activities where they may participate.
