Dorothy Martirano

Dorothy Martirano has performed in North, Central and South America, Europe and Asia.  She plays locally and regionally with several groups, including Ms. M & the Jokers, Almost “A”, Tangotta, Compost Q, Spinnin’ Slidin’, Scratchin’, and Maria & Company.

She enjoys playing alternate styles, and specializes in contemporary music and improvisation, especially with dancers.  She has premiered many new works for violin.

She taught strings and orchestra in the Urbana Schools for many years, and taught privately as well.

She has performed and recorded with the Tone-Road Ramblers, the Cal Arts Contemporary Chamber Players, and the University of Chicago Contemporary Chamber Players.    Now retired from orchestral playing, she was concertmaster of the CUSO for 21 years, and of the Danville Symphony, Prairie Ensemble and B.A.C.H. during various past seasons, and principal second violinist with Sinfonia da Camera in the mid 80s.  She has performed with the Springfield Symphony, the Illinois Chamber Orchestra, and the Jacksonville Symphony.

She has recorded for Centaur, Polydor, New World Records, Hal Leonard, Paramount Pictures, Einstein Records, the Korean Broadcasting Corp, CUCD, and Pogo Studios, among others.
